TIP: Hovering over a photo, slide show or diagram on the web often gives you menu choices to choose from. Like "Play."
Extra Activity: Use a straw to blow bubbles into 3 different plaster of paris mixtures. Each mixture should have a different viscosity. Write a DESCRIPTIVE paragraph on what you noticed about the bubbles in each mixture. Be sure to include what this tells you about volcanoes.
Extra Activity: Do an experiment to learn more about viscosity. Using the following food items - water, pudding, ketchup, syrup, apple juice, and 2 more of your choice - put the "liquids" in order from most viscous to least viscous. Extra Activity: Research earthquake and volcano stories and myths from Greeks mythology. What did the myth explain? Be ready to tell one of the stories you learned to the class. Extra Activity: Take a look at these extra photos. On a piece of paper, write down the number for each photo and at least a one sentence caption for what you think is happening. Use as many Volcano Vocabulary as you can. Turn in to your teacher. Extra Activity: Writing prompt - What if you were working for the geological survey team at the time when Mt. St. Helens erupted? Extra Activity: Research the ten most recent volcanic eruptions. Create a Google Map to show their location. In your "pin" include the name, type, composition of the volcano and it's approximate distance from a fault line. Use the distance tool to help you. Present what you find to the class. Extra Activity: Scientist use lasers, tilt meters and satellites to monitor changes in the earth. Design your own invention that could show a change in the Earth's crust. Extra Activity: Watch the videos on Mount St. Helen's. Tell how you feel about the loggers continuing to work, your thoughts on the red zone, and the luck of Roald and Venus. Extra Activity: Study the regeneration process that occurred after Mt. St. Helen erupted. Make several sketches that show the sequence of life as it reappeared. You could make some of the items 3D!
