Instructions
Day 1 1a. Choose "Operation: Tectonic Fury" from the left menu.
Day 2
2a. Learn more by reading the "Operation Overview." Read to the end of the section called "Discovery." 2b. Compare/ Contrast, Visualize: Take a sheet of unlined paper. Divide it in half. Label the left side "Galapagos Islands" and the right side "Mexico." Neatly draw pictures of what Dr. Ballard found when he went to each of the ocean bottoms. Color them as YOU think they looked. Write the name underneath. Day 3
3a. Go back to the Operation Overview. Scroll down and read "What is Geology?" "Geology and the World Around Us" AND "Challenges." 3b. Determining Importance.
3c. Submit your homework.

4. CLASS: Explore Google Earth by zooming, noting features, exploring use of layers, and how scale can change. Day 5

5b. Read "What is a Map" and write down 3 different types of data that can be represented on a map. 5c. Visualize.
Day 6

"Topographic Maps" 6b. Go to "Mapping Technology."
Next, tell why it is your favorite. Finally, explain what you learned from this AND OTHER maps today. Day 7

"Latitude and Longitude" 7b. Read "Parts of a Map." 1. Read all sections of the article including "Map Projections." 2. Write down all of the Map Conventions and Coordinate System words (Title, Compass Rose, Legend, etc.) in a list and leave space for a definition. 3. Paraphrase each of the 8 sentences on a piece of loose leaf. 4. Check to be sure that you changed each definition to be in your own words. 5. Turn it in when you are finished. 7c. Identify the parts of a map
7d. Spend time completing the activity in the Your Turn section.
7e. Just for fun, examine the UNUSUAL Maps your teacher shows you in a Google Presentation. Then vote for your favorite unusual map on the green paper in the back by putting a tally mark under that map! Day 8

9. Thinking Critically. Log into your Google Docs account. Create a new document. Title your entry with your initials and the word "Overview." Rephrase the question with your answer. Answer 3 of the following questions. Be sure to SHARE with your teacher and partner when you finish. 1. Is it likely that some of the things you learn in science class will change in the next fifty years? What would they be and how would they change? 2. Why is it important to learn science if so much of what we know can change? 3. What kinds of things can geology teach us about the world around us? 4. Why is mapping important? Give at least three reasons. 5. Dr. Ballard offers several examples of how scientific knowledge has changed since he was in school. What other changes in scientific knowledge have occurred over the last fifty years? Day 10
