1. What are some of the most pressing needs immediately following a natural disaster? 2. What are some of the longer term needs? 3. What agencies specialize in meeting those needs? 4. What are some of the biggest challenges faced by relief agencies when dealing with natural disasters? 5. What are some ways the general public can help? Extra Activity: Write a NARRATIVE story or DESCRIPTIVE essay based on one of the following prompts... 1. What if you were riding in a car crossing a bridge and a major earthquake began? 2. What if you were in bed when a magnitude 8 earthquake struck? 3. What if you lived within one mile of the San Andreas Fault? 4. What if you have just survived the San Francisco earthquake of 1906? Extra Activity: You are a scientist who is being criticized for not correctly predicting the latest earthquake which was very destructive. Defend your job by explaining what factors prevent you from being more accurate. Present your information using an interview style. Ask a friend to be the "reporter" asking you the tough questions the public wants answers to. Record using a flip camera or podcast. Extra Activity: You are a college graduate from a school of engineering. You believe the current seismometers are not good enough. Design a new model with at least two improvements.
